For your general interest (and continuing on from previously): Mobile Choice keep a weekly list of the Top 10 postpay and prepay phones in terms of sales in the UK, on a weekly basis. I thought we'd take a look what they are for w/c 15th Feb:

In postpay, and not dissimilar from last time, the preponderance of Sony Ericsson and Nokia devices from their respective mid-ranges is quite clear to see. The N95 and N95-8Gb are also doing good numbers - I read somewhere recently that the N95 has done 7m units across continents, so that's a major win for Nokia!

In the land of prepay, SE and Nokia are again owning the market - although Nokia may have 40% market share on a European/Global basis (these stats are always disputed), SE are literally snapping at Nokia's heels in the UK.

I'll repeat this list in 1-2 weeks and see what shifts, if any we have

No sooner have we crossed the mid-point of February (highlighted nicely with Valentine's Day!), than a story about Xmas 08 appears - stop the madness! Where will it all end!?

Anyway, this story is about the battlelines being drawn up for Christmas as regards what the "hero" devices might be - in the Prepay segment (i.e. those which often sell in supermarkets).

Apparently, supermarket chains have been out at MWC, and industry experts are saying that the traditional Mobile sales pandemonium this year will be led by 5MP camera devices (such as the Nokia N95 above), in a £80-100 tier.
This would mean an extremely interesting period before Xmas, where both retailers and device vendors are scrabbling to up their numbers for Q4 - of course, what will be the prepay handsets are actually already in circulation, since they drip down from being "new postpay" to "cheap prepay" over the course of the year.

As you might expect, big players will be Nokia, SE, Samsung and LG - all with established devices in circulation - this shouldn't rule out new devices coming on to the market though!

Last year in the MNOs, it was Orange who dived deepest, with 000,000's of LG handsets in an super-cheap £10-20 tier. In the supermarkets, obviously bitter rivals Sainsbury's and Tesco were major players - and this year you can be sure both these chains had buyers at MWC, making the deals for Xmas.

Of course, lest we not forget the other major forces in UK retail - Argos (a UK chain, where you buy from a catalogue in store and then the products are delivered via conveyor belt to you from a store room upstairs!) is a pivotal retailer as far as some vendors are concerned - judging by how full my local Argos was last Xmas, I would certainly not disagree!

So, it will be interesting to see how the retail landscape for Mobile devices plays out this year - and whether those 5MP prepay devices will be the difference-maker!

Here's a quick peek at the newly announced Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 "Organizer" phones from Mobile World Congress. We had a chance to talk with some Sony Ericsson reps and they showed us their un-smartphone in all its glory. It's not exactly a smartphone and it's marketed more for the busy individual that just needs quick access to all their data without the fuss of a full-blown smartphone.

Still, the SE G700 and G900 are the smartest "feature phones" that we've ever seen. We just wish the touchscreen displays were a bit larger (but then, we might be even more inclined to call it a smartphone). Oh, and that "sticky note" feature is definitely cool.

Find more info on the Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 here.

Take a look at the demonstration video below.

Right, late again. Hey, better late tha…it's late, apologies. Let's move on.

Take a gander at the Sony Ericsson booth at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2008. The main attractions here were the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and the Sony Ericsson C902 CyberShot. Unfortunately, the XPERIA X1 was under glass, and the guy giving the demo was out for lunch - figures.

Check out our quick hands-on of the SE C902 here.

New Sony Ericsson clamshell leaked

What we have here is a piece of the print ad or manual of the still unannounced Sony Ericsson phone. Apparently, the upcoming device — if it ever gets released — will have a clamshell form factor and will among other things sport the built-in GPS receiver.

The device itself looks very stylish and somehow we find it has elements of "Z" series and the newly announced W980 Walkman phone. The keypad is pretty much identical to the W980 and we love it. Or at least I do…
