The new iPhone v1.1.4 firmware update has been dissected by Italian Mac website Macitynet, and it seems that the iPhone v1.1.4 is ready to rock on T-Mobile Austria and O2 Ireland. Apple hasn't yet confirmed that the iPhone is coming to either Austria or Ireland, but having the network compatibility codes stored within the latest firmware is a pretty indicator that the iconic device will be coming to those respective countries.
Further, it makes sense for Apple to include T-Mobile Austria compatibility in the latest firmware. We already have confirmation from T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan that the iPhone will be coming to Austria by this summer. And, that only gives more credibility to the speculation that the iPhone will be hitting O2 Ireland's network.
Still, the new code begs the question - is the iPhone v1.1.4 firmware "the one" that will work with iPhone SDK applications? Will there be another update before this summer? Well, if Apple were to hold off on updating the iPhone for a few months, we'd be surprised indeed.

O2 has won a contract with Network Rail (these are the guys that own, and operate, the rail infrastructure in the UK) - the deal is to provide the corporate voice, data, and BlackBerry mobile email. This is apparently O2's biggest corporate win, and to give you some idea of the scale of things, it will be over 23,000 accounts transferring over!
O2 will be working to develop mobile solution to assist NR with their management of the railways - as a regular commuter myself, I can tell you that Rail is one of the most challenging environments to provide consistent services for, due to the rapidly changing (and signal-defeating) conditions experienced - my Nokia registers "no coverage", "no data", GPRS, EDGE, 3G, and 3.5G during my trips - a good example of how the rail line cuts through mobile network cells.
I am going to say it again, but O2 knows how to do things in the UK - I'm a subscriber myself, and they consistently provide a better user experience, compared to any other network - just because I can, they get the Ben Rating (again) of:

5 stars! Well done O2! Again!

With carriers and manufacturers rushing to get femtocells into the hands of the end-user, the those searches decent wireless signals are going to be a fading memory. Femtocells are basically end-user wireless signal boosters - they help customers get reliable signal strength and reduce infrastructure costs for carriers. No wonder Sprint's already commercialized their femtocell offering and Nokia Siemens and T-Mobile are working on bringing to technology to market.
Now it looks like there are a couple new players in the femtocell game. O2 is working with NEC to trial 3G femtocells in the UK, while Vodafone Spain is set to trial 3G femtocells from Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent. If all goes well, O2 says that they'll be offering femtocell technology to customers next year.
Can you hear me know? Darn tootin' you can!

(note: yes, I know this is the poster for 2007!)
O2 has announced itself as the lead sponsor of the Wireless Festival this year, making it four consecutive years.
The festival will have a selection of international artists across four dates in July, as well new music from artists on the O2 blueroom stage.
As in the Dome, O2 customers will have VIP areas, which will be managed using NFC technology (something else that O2 is becoming a bit of an expert at). In addition to that mobile techology, tickets will also be able to be purchased via Mobile - last year O2 sold £200K this way, doubling on 2006.
Other Mobile technologies will include UGC (user-generated content) to get pictures/videos on to big screens and O2 Active (the portal) - all for free via Bluetooth!
This to me just indicates O2's total leadership in marketing activities in the UK - as well as the O2 (Dome) and the iPhone, O2 continues to innovate and lead the pack - time to get out another Ben rating:

Well done (again again!!) O2

Following the successful trial with 500,000 O2 customers during 2007, the Telefonica owned mobile operator decided it's about time to enter the mobile advertising space. The company plans to grow the UK mobile advertising market with a new service which will allow brands to take advantage of the opportunities presented by mobile advertising, and bring relevant, targeted and informative advertising to its customers.
The O2 Active mobile portal is the place where all the action will be happening and the carrier will enable brands to deliver both display advertising and ad-supported content models to specific audiences, all while providing them with the tools to measure how effective their campaigns are and which audiences react well to their adverts. Advertiser's micro-sites will be zero rated so that customers who click through will not incur any data charges while they are browsing on these sites.
In addition, O2 will provide brands with more targeting possibilities than on any other traditional advertising platform, with its own service boasting opportunities to carry out behavioural, demographic, geographic, and channel-based targeting. The mobile advertising agency 4th Screen will be in charge of sales…
