Talk about a tough road ahead. This guy's got a doozy of a mess to clean up when he takes his position as Motorola's Chief Financial Officer this March 1st. We're talking, of course, about Paul Liska, the replacement for Motorola's interim CFO Tom Meredith.

Motorola names new CFO Paul LiskaLiska should bring something of a fresh outlook on Moto's troubled finances. Many believed that Motorola's next CFO would come from within the company, but it seems that Motorola wanted to look for a new face to try and drive their ship toward more profitable waters. Liska comes from outside the company and has pulled financial-duty with the likes of Sears and private equity firms. Maybe this sort of executive change-up is exactly what the troubled handset manufacturer needs.

That's not to say that Meredith did a bad job as the head money-guy at Motorola. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Jim Suva, a Citigroup analyst, praised Meredith for helping plug the leaky hole that is the Good Ship Motorola. Remember that positive Q4 report? Yea, that's all Meredith right there.

Paul Liska's private-equity background could also bring insight into Motorola's possible handset division sell-off. Although, we'd think the company's most pressing concern would be to put their house back in order - you know, curb appeal can really increase selling price.

sad MotorolaOn and on we cover bad news coming from Motorola. Actually, this isn't confirmed yet but according to Engadget Mobile's tipster, the American handset maker has laid off more than 200 additional employees recently. Apparently, people working with the customer service, mobile, and lab departments in Moto's home town of Schaumburg, Illinois took the bulk of the hit.

Again, we have nothing confirmed, but this is everything but a surprise to everyone who's following the industry. Plus, when a company's in trouble, it's the cost-cutting measures shareholders are always cheering for.

MOTO ROKR E8 coming to T-Mobile

This isn't actually confirmed, but Engadget stumbled across shots of the T-Mobile branded MOTO ROKR E8. The myFaves logo is also there and it's fair to argue we'll soon have something more to report. Even though the Deutsche Telekom owned carrier is still quiet, something tells us we'll see them rocking with news sooner rather than later…

The T-Mobile's version seems identical to the original device, hence there's no 3G radio on board — EDGE is the fastest you can get with this baby. But then again, the whole idea of the "mighty morphin" ROKR E8 isn't the Internet. It's the music man! ;)

What you're about to see is apparently the teaser video for the upcoming Motorola Z12 phone. As far as we can tell, nothing in this clip tells us the Z12 is coming. However, considering that we've already heard rumors in the past, this may be the start of the long unveiling process for the Z12. Hopefully by the Mobile World Congress we'll have more information to share. In the meantime, enjoy the short video…

Now this is how you try to change things on the wayward ship that is Motorola's mobile phone division. The handset manufacturing arm of Motorola has seen better times. More specifically, the times that immediately followed the Motorola RAZR's initial release. Those were good (read: rich) times at Moto.

But, after four straight quarters of massive losses (the most recent loss was $388 million - massive enough for 'ya?), Motorola has seriously examined the proposition of selling off its cellphone business.

Motorola handset divisionToday, Motorola announced that newly appointed CEO Greg Brown will take direct control of the helm at Motorola's handset division. Brown apparently wanted to oversee the unit and help it return to greener pastures (you know, green, as in the color of money).

Now, the question remains. Is this move just the latest last-ditch effort by Motorola to save the handset division? Are they getting ready to sell the unit? Only time will tell. But with the hits they've been taking, it probably won't be too long before we know for sure.
